More on McCain

The Times' Public Editor weighs in, somewhat more critical of the paper's decision to run the story, here. This is really a fascinating study in modern presidential politics and journalism. Nuance is lost in the crush of the 24-hour news cycle and the cable news/entertainment mash-up. Where does that leave nuanced reporting?

If everyone refuses to mention Nader, will he disappear?

Btw, if you haven't already, check out the resemblance between Cindy McCain and Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous, it's uncanny...

Also, re. slang coinage, I was curious about the origins of the word "uncanny," since we certainly don't use the term "canny," and Wikipedia's explanation is worth sharing:

The Uncanny (Ger. Das Unheimliche) is a Freudian concept of an instance where something can be familiar, yet foreign at the same time, resulting in a feeling of it being uncomfortably strange.

Because the uncanny is familiar, yet strange, it often creates cognitive dissonance within the experiencing subject due to the paradoxical nature of being attracted to, yet repulsed by an object at the same time. This cognitive dissonance often leads to an outright rejection of the object, as one would rather reject than rationalize.

On second thought, I think I'd just describe the striking resemblance between the two ladies as unreal. Unless Cindy McCain IS Patsy of course.

This is a little off topic, but I am disappointed in you Daniel. I know that the presidential race is very important and very interesting right at the moment, but I am concerned that your obssession has gone too far.

Why have you gone too far, you ask? Because, you have neglected to mention that the fabulous Boston Celtics are number one in the Eastern Conference. Get some perspective man! I am not a huge basketball person, but the sense of nostalgia that the Celtics evoke in me has forced me to hold my tongue no longer. They deserve some Pickle love.

Eleanor, you make a good point. Sports have been neglected by The Pickle for far too long. I'll work on it...

canny is definitely a word, it´s just not the opposite of uncanny; it means shrewd.

dan, i really like your blog, even though i´ve only been able to read a bit of it. i actually recently started me own blog experiment in "creative nonfiction," which is significantly more trivial than yours in scope, but hopefully interests nonetheless. if you want to take a look, it´s at

p.s. slang coinage is an old hobby of mine. i´ll send over anything good that occurs to me.
