Before I put this day to bed, a toast

Tomorrow, we'll wake up to the day after which a black man, forever, will have been President of the United States. Barack Hussein Obama, tomorrow, will break a long line. From its founding, our unique and beautiful country, forged in the fires of religious oppression, built on the unholy ground of racial oppression, has been raised to the heights of empire by a ruling elite that is many things, but above all white. This is not a repudiation of our racial past; it is a celebration of the impossible power of this country, for all its as yet considerable imperfections, to audaciously strike at the heart of our most horrible sin – our original sin – by absorbing it in our original grace. Tomorrow, we will tell Bush where he can Shove It (!), by drowning his story of America in a far more resonant one, which strikes a chord in perfect harmony with our common spirit. Yes, we can.

To Barack Obama, but even more, to our country, which will face all the challenges tomorrow that it faces today, but which has written the perfect poetry to tell of its greatness by choosing him.
